2020 Fiat 500X Turbo Review: Great Recipe for Small SUV
With the 2020 Fiat 500X, Fiat has found a recipe that works. So when it comes time to update it, you do not want to upset everything. The Fiat 500X evolves with small aesthetic touches while caring for its engines and technologies.
One of the main pillars on which Fiat relies for the 500X turns out to be the style. Many remember the advertising campaign with the famous blue pill that fell in the tank of a Fiat 500 before turning it into 2020 Fiat 500X. Filiation with the city girl adored for her look was well highlighted. Obviously, everything is a matter of taste and colors, but here the numbers confirm that the look of the 500X pleases. Thus, if usually the criterion of style represents 30% of the motivation of purchase on the market, this value goes up to 60% for the Fiat 500X .
That being said, it is hard to see how Fiat could have dared upset the lines of the Fiat 500X during this restyling. As for the restyled 500 in 2015, Fiat has therefore played the card of caution with some discreet developments. There are thus in series new LED optical blocks. As an option, there are new headlamps with full LED technology , they replace the Xenon lights of the previous model and are 20% brighter. Shields are also changing, especially in the new Urban version. In the back, we will still point the lights that are now hollowed out in their center as the restyled Fiat 500 and that will make it easier to recognize this restyled 500X. Rather slight changes in sum.
2020 Fiat 500X Configuration
The Fiat 500X now exists in five different versions: Urban, Opening Edition, City Cross, Cross and Club. The last three offer a more adventurous look with new protection plates, to “reaffirm their bold identity” according to the press release. Not surprisingly, most SUVs on the market are also playing the adventure card. For the 500X, only the Cross and the Club are available with a true 4X4 transmission. Combined with the 2.0l diesel engine of 150 horsepower, this latest version suffers from a heavy malus in France that will make it anecdotal. It is therefore better to focus on the smaller blocks that will account for the majority of sales.
2020 Fiat 500X Turbo Specs
Developed on a modular structure with a 0.33 liter cylinder, the new range of FireFly gasoline enginesturbo gasoline is compliant with the Euro 6 / D-TEMP standard and is equipped with a particulate filter. Available for the first time on a Fiat model, this range includes a 1-liter three-cylinder engine, delivering 120 horsepower and up to 190 Nm of torque, combined with a six-speed manual transmission to the front wheels, and an engine four-cylinder 1.3-liter 150 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque, paired with an automatic six-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission. Diesel side, besides the 2.0l of 150 horses already mentioned, the choice is given between a 1.3l of 95 horses in manual gearbox and a 1.6l of 120 horses available in manual or automatic gearbox. These are also compliant with the Euro 6 / D-TEMP standard.
On the occasion of this launch, we were able to take charge of the three-cylinder 120 horsepower on a route between the north of France and the Belgian coast. If the roads were not ideal for judging the exact behavior of the Fiat 500X, we have however been able to appreciate the approval of this engine. Rather voluntary, it shows itself well under the hood of the small Italian SUV and offers quite sufficient performance. Despite its three-cylinder architecture, this small block of a liter did not cause too much vibration and was not too loud. Despite these qualities, the consumption did not appear as very measured with 7.8l / 100km taken to the onboard computer during our trip..
2020 Fiat 500X Interior
Inside, the Fiat 500X is also evolving smoothly. There is still an instrumentation, finishes and a revised steering wheel. It is mainly the equipment that has been updated with an upgraded security arsenal. The Fiat 500X is equipped with an intelligent speed limiter in series. Thanks to a camera, it can adapt the speed of the car to traffic signs visible at the roadside. Although the system is not 100% reliable, it is still a useful tool to avoid getting caught by radar. There is also an automatic lane departure warning in series while for blind spot warning and autonomous emergency braking, it will be necessary to resort to the list of options. In addition to these security features, the 2020 Fiat 500X also offers a Uconnect infotainment system that can now integrate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
